Before the journey
Original Wholeness
We begin open, alive, receptive, and whole. Then we are born into a particular world of relationships, expectations, limits, and losses. Survival narrows the field, and the journey begins.
Imago and the Journey of Human Becoming
The Wizard of Oz gives memorable form to the journey at the heart of Imago Relationship Therapy: the movement from adaptation to wholeness, from separation to connection, and from certainty to curiosity. Its characters embody differentiated parts of the Self. Its events bring wounding, crisis, encounter, and healing to life. Its Yellow Brick Road is a container for dialogue — with others, and with our own disowned or lost parts. Its path is one we can learn, remember, and walk.
Before the journey
We begin open, alive, receptive, and whole. Then we are born into a particular world of relationships, expectations, limits, and losses. Survival narrows the field, and the journey begins.
Dialogue develops in stages. Becoming dialogical is a journey from the felt separateness of self-absorption toward the deep interconnection of genuine relationship—a movement that parallels Dorothy’s journey from loneliness and vulnerability in Kansas toward a deeper experience of love and a profound sense of home.
This lens draws on philosopher Ashok Gangadean’s Stages of Deep Dialogue, explored here alongside the journey of the Yellow Brick Road.
Each stage becomes a trail marker, inviting us to ask:
“Where am I? Am I closer to separateness or closer to connection?”
“What would it mean to open myself to a different world and to reclaim or deepen my capacity for dialogue?”
Deep Dialogue
The Journey Through Oz
In response to painful experiences, a protective identity takes shape. Adaptive survival strategies preserve safety, attachment, and belonging, while capacities that do not fit the world around us are quieted or sent away.
Deep Dialogue
The Journey Through Oz
Crisis breaks the familiar map. It is both a danger and a doorway of possibility. It can be a doorway to another world where alternate realities and possibilities become visible.
Deep Dialogue
The Journey Through Oz
With the ruby slippers for protection, Dorothy can enter the unfamiliar without losing herself, and she is able to stay open and curious.
Deep Dialogue
The Journey Through Oz
Thinking, feeling, acting, and sensing become differentiated. Dialogue begins within and between.
Deep Dialogue
The Journey Through Oz
Encounter enlarges identity. Honoring and respecting difference becomes a path to connection rather than a threat.
Deep Dialogue
The Journey Through Oz
Projection is reclaimed, illusion dissolves, and what was sought outside can finally be received within.
Deep Dialogue
The Journey Through Oz
Love and power integrate. Glinda’s caring and wisdom are internalized. Dorothy can hold Kansas and Oz, self and other, without collapsing either.
Deep Dialogue
The Journey Through Oz
She returns with a wiser wholeness: present, receptive, and able to receive the wisdom within us, between us, and all around us.
The story does not merely illustrate the theory. It gives the theory a living world: characters we remember, crises we recognize, and a road upon which we can locate ourselves.
With gratitude to my mentors
This synthesis grows from teachers whose work changed how I understand dialogue, healing, and what it means to become fully human.
Founders of Imago Relationship Therapy
Their pioneering work revealed how love grows through safety, curiosity, empathy, and the healing of relational disconnection, and how dialogue can restore connection and joyful aliveness.
The Stages of Deep Dialogue
His map illuminates the movement across worlds: from self-absorption and certainty toward encounter, multiple perspectives, dignity, and interbeing.
The Yellow Brick Road synthesis
Drawing on decades as a clinician, teacher, and writer, I bring these streams into dialogue with depth psychology, neuroscience, contemplative wisdom, and the enduring journey of Oz.
